Three Persons Charged With Drugs Possession
Three ex-convicts were charged conjointly Monday in Common Pleas Court with possession of narcotics after a former conviction of a felony. The trio was arrested Saturday night by Tulsa detectives armed with a jar of spaghetti and meatballs and a .38 service revolver.
The spaghetti and meatballs and the .38 may have saved Det. Sgt. Cal Newton and Gary Glanz from an assailant with a long knife.
Acting on a tip from Patrol Officer Frank Comfort, detectives said they persuaded a drunk Saturday night to get them a "fix." Glanz, dressed in ragged blue jeans from the police property room and acting "high," walked the street while Newton hid nearby. Glanz had Newton’s revolver, and Newton was unarmed. Other officers in cars had the two-block area surrounded.
Asked for "Fix"
Officers said three men came out of a garage apartment at 2307 E. 7th St., and asked what the two men wanted. The drunk asked for a "fix" for Glanz.
One of the trio pointed to an automobile and said: "Put him in my car and we’ll give him a fix."
Sgt. Newton was spotted, and Glanz told the three men he wanted a "fix" too. Sgt. Newton, who sometimes does a drunk act at the police station for fun, found a jar of spaghetti and meatballs near the suspect’s car.
Acting intoxicated and holding the jar of spaghetti and meatballs in front of his face, Sgt. Newton staggered toward the trio he has helped arrest many times.
One said "Hey, Slim, wait a minute!" Then to his companions, "This guy’s really knocked out. He’s going to be easy."
Saw Knife Opened
As Sgt. Newton backed toward a "stake out," the trio tried to approach him, but the officer staggered out of their reach. Glanz said he saw one of the men drop behind the others and open a long bladed knife.
Glanz drew the revolver, identified himself as an officer and ordered the man to drop the knife. He refused and was knocked down with the pistol. Sgt. Newton downed another with the jar of spaghetti and meatballs, and the third one surrendered.
During the melee, the drunk escaped.
Jailed were Nolan Ray Craft, 34, glen Eugene Ragle, 25, and J.D. Leigh, 22, all ex-convicts. Craft’s wife, Mary Ann, 24, was charged in Municipal Court with possession of barbiturates. She pleaded not guilty and was released Monday on $1,500 bond.
The others remained in city jail. Officers said they found Demoral tablets near the apartment.
