Two Suspects Arrested In Separate Robberies

Two men arrested as suspects in separate grocery store hold-ups were charged in Common Pleas Court Monday with armed robbery.

Gary Wayne Bryant, 21, was charged with robbing the Git-N-Go store at 3549 S. Harvard Ave. early Monday.

He was arrested about 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 2900 block on E. 41st Street by Detective Gary Glanz after another officer had been in the store moments before the holdup.

Officer J.R. Brown said he took a break during his patrol shift and went into the store. He said he saw and Indian man inside.

Shortly after he left, he was dispatched back to the store to investigate an armed robbery. The manager said the man the officer had seen was the one who had robbed him of about $296.

Brown said the bandit bought groceries and then stood at the counter waiting for others to leave. The robber asked questions about how to go to work for the Git-N-Go stores. Then he asked for a sack, pulled a gun, and said, "Give me your money." The bandit also demanded "five rolls of dimes and all your quarters."

Glanz said he heard the robbery broadcast by the police radio and sat on a parking lot near Edison High School with his lights out. When cars came by, Glanz shone his spotlight on them.

He said he beamed his light on a car driven by an Indian man. The car stopped and the driver got out. He walked toward Glanz’s car. Glanz radioed the dispatcher he was stopping a husky driver.

Officer Assists

Officer Charles Hodges came to assist Glanz. The detective said the driver asked: "What’s the matter officer?"

Glanz said he stood shivering with his hands in his pocket. "Oh nothing," he said. "I’m just looking for a short stocky Indian man who robbed a Git-N-Go store. Are you the one?"

He said the man said he wasn’t, and they stood talking until Hodges arrived. Hodges checked the man’s car while Glanz checked his driver’s license. When Hodges looked inside the vehicle, he went for his gun.

Glanz said officers found a new .25 caliber pistol in its box inside the vehicle and recovered more than $301 cash.

Suspect Identified

Officers said en route to the station, the driver said he had robbed a Git-N-Go store last week.

Bryant was identified in a police lineup, officers said.

Quinion Roy Leigh, 17, was charged with the hold-up of the Safeway Store at Pine Street and Sheridan Road. A "John Doe" was named in the charge with Leigh, but the second suspect has not been arrested.

Two Involved

Police said two bandits robbed the store, and were driven from the scene in a car later found abandoned in the 6200 block of E. Pine St.

Leigh was found under a church at 6212 E. Pine St. by police who said they were told by a witness that a man jumped from the car and crawled under the church. The second man ran from the scene, officers were told.
